IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY – LET’S CELEBRATE!

The club was formed in 1933 so this year, we turn 90!  Many things have changed over the years but one thing has remained constant – enthusiastic members who love their bridge.

It’s thanks to our members that we survived COVID, during which time you supported the club by playing online during the pandemic and returned to the club for “face to face” bridge when it was safe to do so.  Beginners classes have resumed and our numbers both online and in the club continue to grow.   Plenty to celebrate!

Without our members, the club wouldn’t survive so as a “thank you” to our members and to celebrate this milestone, the Board invite you all to an afternoon of bridge, snacks/beverages and fun on Sunday 3rd September between 1.30 and 5pm.

Please sign up in the usual way on our website.  (Don’t worry if you don’t have a partner as we’ll find one for you on the day.)

THIS EVENT IS FREE OF CHARGE AND IS FOR CLUB MEMBERS ONLY.

ABERDEEN “DOORS OPEN” DAY – 2ND SEPTEMBER 2023

Cafe Bridge around Scotland

Cafe Bridge is becoming popular way of having a fun day of Bridge. In each event you play in various cafes and bars around the town of the bridge club that is organising it. You are given a schedule and a map. Usually you play 3 boards in a venue and then move on to the next one.
Entry fees normally cover Bridge, a lunch and refreshments and go to support a charity.
Prizes are awarded at the end of the day.

There are 3 events coming up in Scotland.

  1. Perth on Saturday 19th of August
  2. Dunkeld on Tuesday 24th of October
  3. Plockton on Thursday 26th October

Sylvia Henderson

Members of the Club will be saddened to learn of the recent death of Sylvia Henderson on 5th May. She had been playing with the Club until quite recently, despite her recent poor health about which she never complained.

The following notes have been compiled by a few of the members who remember her over the years.

Sylvia was very proud of her Buckie roots and close loving family.

She left home to become a nurse, qualified as a midwife and worked in the challenging conditions where she experienced events which can only be likened to the stories we watch in Call the Midwife.

She moved back to Aberdeen where she continued nursing and midwifery before becoming a district nurse which was a career she loved.

She married Ron, whom she sadly lost during the pandemic, but was stoical in the face of her loss, especially at this time.  Ron and Sylvia loved cruising and enjoyed many fantastic holidays together.  He was much missed.

Sylvia coped surrounded by her many friends and her beloved Cairn Terrier, Holly who sadly passed away in January, aged 17.  Sylvia lived her whole life with a doggie companion and they were all very special to her.

Sylvia in later years had battles with her health  but she soldiered on, still able to live independently and to drive.  She was indebted to her dearest friend Isobel McWilliam, also a long term member of the bridge club for being such a help and support to her.

As for her bridge career, Sylvia was regarded as a very good bridge player and had partners whom she played with and who went to congresses with her.  She became President of Northern Arts Club for a period of time.

She will be sadly missed by all her bridge playing friends.
