EGM Vote

Dear Members

The result of the EGM vote on 24 August was decisive support for our application for charity status (49 votes for and 2 votes against). I showed 6 slides and attach these for information, as requested by a few of you. We are now finalising the club’s application for charity status and will let you know of progress in the next newsletter and at the AGM on Fri 23 Nov at 6 pm. Please put this date/time in your diaries and attend if at all possible. The AGM is followed by food and by a fun bridge tournament, which is designed to mix members, old and new, experienced and less so. No one should fear critical comments – these are not allowed on this fun night.

NEW SPARE PLAYER INITIATIVE FOR THE NEW SEASON (Thursday evenings)

Dear Members,

The committee at its last meeting decided to try out a scheme which has been successful in other clubs. We are aware that some members shy away because they cannot find a regular partner.

On Thursday evenings downstairs beginning this week on the 6th of September we invite you to enter the tournament without a partner.  Please let us know if you intend playing by entering your name on the noticeboard at the bottom of the entry sheet or phone the club by 6.15 to enter.

This initiative can only work if we have a list of volunteers willing to come along ready to play but should they not be required they will have to go home.

Volunteers will receive a voucher to play for free in the club, either on the night, or on any other occasion where regular club tournaments are taking place. Vouchers will be kept in the bar till for you to collect on the night.

Our first volunteer is Fumi. I would be grateful if you could let me know if you are willing to be a spare player on a Thursday evening.  That way we compile a list. It would be great to get volunteers for the following 5 weeks.  We will remind you of course that you have enlisted for a particular evening.  My email address is

European Open Bridge Championships, Kusadasi 15-29 June 2019

The EBL is delighted to announce that the Turkish Bridge Federation has agreed to host the European Open Bridge Championships in the Ephesus Convention Center in Kusadasi from 15th to 29th June 2019. http://www.ecc.com.tr/home/

The spacious venue is fully air-conditioned throughout and as Kusadasi is one of Turkey’s safe and secular tourist jewels like its close neighbour Bodrum, the event promises to be memorable.

Further details will be posted on the European Bridge League website (www.eurobridge.org ) in the coming weeks.

North District Bridge – New Season

Dear

I am writing to introduce myself and to let you know that I have taken over from Loraine Findlay as Chair of the North District.

We are all looking forward to the new bridge season starting at the end of August.  The new calendar is up on the North District website for you to view:  http://www.sbunorth.co.uk/calendar.html

For now there are three things I would like to let you know about which are coming up soon.

Firstly:
If your Club enters or wishes to enter a Team of 8 in the Winter League, the Captain’s Meeting is being held at the Bridge Club Rubislaw Terrace on Friday 31 August at 19:00

If this is of interest and you would like further information please let me know – contact details below.  It is an event for all bridge players new and old.

Secondly:
I would like to encourage your club to enter teams in the District Teams of 4.  This event is normally played in 5 rounds on the first Friday of every month at Aberdeen Bridge Club starting 7pm (Please see calendar and note that there is a spare date in case of adverse weather.)

If you haven’t played in this event before please give it a go – get in touch with me for more details.  Again please note that this competition is for beginners and upwards and provides a great opportunity to play ‘Teams Bridge’ which many think is the better and more exciting game.

Thirdly:
We are acutely aware as a Committee that some of the rural bridge clubs are struggling for numbers.  We are looking into placing adverts, most likely in the Press and Journal, to encourage former players and those wishing to learn to join a local club.  It may help and we can only try and see.  We will keep you informed on this.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me for any reason – if you think there is a chance I can help just ask.

Best wishes
Anne Coles
